New Delhi [India], September 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday extended his greetings on the occasion of the first International Solar Festival, stating that the event unites the world in celebrating the sun's impact and will inspire efforts toward building a better planet.
The Prime Minister highlighted India's progress in green energy over the past decade, noting that the country's solar energy capacity has increased 32 times in the last 10 years.
"This pace and scale will also help India reach 500 Giga Watts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030," said PM Modi.
In a video message shared on his social media account on X, the Prime Minister remarked, "I am pleased to welcome you all to the first International Solar Festival. I extend my congratulations to the International Solar Alliance for this excellent initiative."
He continued by reflecting on ancient traditions: "The Vedas, written thousands of years ago, include one of the most well-known mantras dedicated to the sun, which millions of Indians still chant today. Cultures worldwide have honored the sun in various ways, and many regions have festivals connected to it."
"This International Solar Festival brings the global community together to celebrate the sun's influence. It’s a festival that will help us create a better planet," he added.
He also noted that 19 additional countries are in the process of ratifying the framework agreement to gain full membership, emphasizing the significance of this organization's growth for the vision of 'One World, One Sun.'
In the past few years, India has made tremendous strides in green energy, being the first G20 nation to fulfill the Paris Agreement commitments in renewable energy. The rapid development of solar energy is a key factor in this achievement, according to the Prime Minister.
"Our solar energy capacity has increased 32 times in the last decade. This pace and scale will also assist in achieving our target of 500 Giga Watts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030," PM Modi reiterated.
He attributed the country's solar sector progress to a well-defined strategy, making solar energy more accessible and affordable through targeted schemes and incentives.
"India's success in the solar sector is a result of a clear strategy. Whether in India or globally, the key to promoting solar energy is awareness, availability, and affordability. We have raised awareness about the importance of sustainable energy and promoted domestic manufacturing. We've also increased the availability of solar options, making them more affordable through specific programs and incentives," he explained.
The Prime Minister described the International Solar Alliance (ISA) as an ideal platform for exchanging ideas and best practices in solar energy adoption. He noted that India has much to contribute in this area, mentioning a recent initiative, the PM Suryagarh Muft Bijli Yojana.
"We are investing ₹750 billion in this scheme, aiming to assist 10 million households in installing rooftop solar panels," PM Modi concluded.
