Raipur, Chhattisgarh, October 25 – Chhattisgarh Governor Ramen Deka and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai extended a warm welcome to President Droupadi Murmu at Raipur’s Swami Vivekananda Airport on Friday.  

The President, on a two-day visit to Chhattisgarh, is scheduled to attend the convocation ceremonies of AIIMS and NIT in Raipur on Friday. On October 25, she will preside over the 2nd convocation of AIIMS, Raipur, and the 14th convocation of NIT, Raipur, and will also visit the Purkhauti Muktangan in Naya Raipur.

On October 26, President Murmu will participate in the 4th convocation of IIT, Bhilai, followed by the 3rd convocation of Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya Memorial Health Science and Ayush University of Chhattisgarh in Raipur.

During her visit, the President will release the 9th installment of funds benefiting 70 lakh women under the Chhattisgarh government’s Mahtari Vandan Yojana. She is also expected to visit the Lord Jagannath Temple in Raipur on Saturday, October 26.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Maa Mahamaya Airport in Darima village, Surguja district, via a virtual event. According to a government release, the new air service is anticipated to enhance connectivity for residents of Surguja and neighboring districts, including Jashpur, Surajpur, Balrampur, Korea, and Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur, allowing for quicker and more economical travel options to major cities nationwide.

The upgraded Maa Mahamaya Airport now links the remote tribal district of Surguja with the rest of the country. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Governor Ramen Deka, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, and other dignitaries were present for the inauguration.

In his remarks, Chief Minister Sai noted that the airport represents a significant milestone for the region, bringing increased employment and improved connectivity for local communities. The airstrip’s upgrade was completed under India’s Regional Connectivity Scheme, covering 365 acres at a cost of Rs 80 crore. Classified as a 3C VFR airport, it can now handle 72-seater aircraft, with an expanded terminal building designed to accommodate up to 500,000 passengers annually.
